Activity summary:

GRID, the Global Resources Information Database, was established in 1985 as part of UNEP's Earthwatch programme (now known as the Division of Environmental Information and Assessment, DEIA) in order to rationalize and standardize the collection of digital environmental data. The major purpose of GRID is to provide a wide variety of users access to accurate and up-to-date environmental data and information. As such, GRID collects or creates, documents, archives and distributes such data sets and related information on the terrestrial surface, oceans and atmosphere. GRID-Geneva is now part of the Environmental Information Networking (EIN) component of the DEIA, and remains on of two major internally-funded centres in the global GRID network. Overall direction and policy responsibility are provided by the DEIA/EIN at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
