Activity summary:

The ICRC was founded in 1863 in Geneva through the efforts of Henri Dunant and is a private Swiss organisation independent of any government. It acts mainly in case of war or armed conflict under a mandate defined in the four Geneva Conventions of 1949. The actions are guided by the seven Red Cross principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
The ICRC is the founding organ of the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement, which is made up of three components; the ICRC, the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, officially recognised by their countries’ governments, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
